Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Which course would suit my child?

A. Course descriptions are given on application form and website: www.rnf.ie  If still in doubt phone:

Q. Will my child be placed in a house with friends?

A. Students can nominate two house companions on the application form and this guarantees they share accommodation with them.

Q. Where do students stay?

A. Students stay with host families in the area. 

1. All host families are registered and passed by the department of the Gaeltacht

a. An Roinn Turasóireachta, Cultúrtha, Gaeltachta, Spóirt agus Meán

2. All adults in lodging houses have full Garda Clearance. 

3. Breakfast, dinner, tea and supper are provided in all houses and laundry is done once per week. All bed clothing is provided by “bean a’ tí”.

Q. What does House Choice mean?

A. If a students attended Coláiste Bhríde previously or was recommended a  particular house:

  1. Fill in preferred house choice 
  2. Otherwise leave it blank
  3. College will attempt to locate student in house of choice but this is not guaranteed 

Q. My child does not have good Irish.

A. We simply ask that students make their best effort and once they do so they will make progress.

Q. What does College Transport by bus mean?

A. The college organises supervised buses

  1. From as far south as Dublin 
  2. Does not apply to County Donegal – (Donegal student usually travel by car)
  3. Travel times, information and cost  are sent (posted or emailed) to student/parent approximately two weeks prior to course. 
  4. Travel cost is not included in College Fee and is an extra.


Q. How much pocket money should they bring?

A. The amount of pocket money you give to your child is at your own discretion 

  1.  A rule of thumb, would be roughly €4 - €10 per day. All pocket money should be in euro. 
    1. In addition a Ranafast Hoodie is also on sale for €35 and we find that many students wish to purchase it. 
    2. As there is no bank nearby, cash should be left in the care of the bean an tí (in a sealed envelope with student’s name clearly written) , 
    3. Cash should be kept safely by student and never left unattended.


Q. What additional items should students bring with them to Rann na Feirste?

A. Students should bring towels, toiletries, a light raincoat, swimwear and sun lotion and sufficient clothing for all weather conditions in North-West Donegal.

  1. As themed events are part of course programs (céilithe/disco/fancy dress/concerts etc.) students may wish to bring additional costumes with them.  It is hoped to give students advance notice of relevant details(due to Covid-19 restrictions) – such information will be provided together with travel details 2 weeks in advance of courses.


Q. Can Students contact home?

A. Students are permitted mobile phones at their lodging house for the purpose of contacting home only.  This policy is due to the need to maintain  a language emersion environment throughout the course. Phone use is organized at the following times: 

  1. 6.30 pm – 7.30 pm 
  2. 10.30-11.00 pm. 
  3. At all other times phones will be held in the lodging house by the bean a’ tí.   
  4. Please attach a label to phone with student’s name


Q. Are there water sports?

A. Students have the opportunity of  participating in:

  1. 1. kayaking on Loch Bhríde behind the college , which is an optional extra at a cost of €10.
  2. 2. Supervised visit to the beach (Blue Flag Beach – with lifeguard support) where students are allowed to swim within a supervised “rope enclosure”, followed by play beach games also.

Q.  How do I apply?

A.  2 Options:

  1. The easiest way is to log on to www.rnf.ie and apply using the easypaymentsplus payment platform, which also provides an on-line Application Form
  2. Download Application Form from www.rnf.ie complete and return together with cheque Deposit for €200/£150*  payable to “Coláiste Bhríde” to the relevant course secretary:#

Q. Are there many places available on Course(s) in 2021?

A. The college has a large capacity but this year the number of places may be decreased due to Covid 19 restrictions , therefore early booking is essential to secure a place.
